As a student how can you use language variety in daily interactions
faust18 [17]

Overhearing talk on trains, in the supermarket etc. suggests to me that language is overwhelmingly used in gossip, particularly to bond two people together by confirming their joint opinion (usually negative) of someone else not present, either known personally or a public figure. It is not about transferring information or giving orders or warnings or the other things that some hypotheses of the evolution of language suggest that it should be about. Of course, language might have been co-opted for uses other than its original one (we did not evolve opposable thumbs to play Nintendo). But are there systematic studies of what people actually use language for outside the lab.?

The question below refers to the selection “The World Is Too Much with Us” by William Wordsworth.
Tcecarenko [31]

Answer: a. People no longer feel that they are part of nature.

Explanation:

Wordsworth's poem ''<em>The World Is Too Much With Us</em> '' deals with our lost relationship with the natural world. The speaker is dissatisfied because people are occupied with material objects instead of appreciating the beauty of nature. In the line <em>"Little we see in nature that is ours'', </em>the speaker uses a judgmental tone to describe people's behavior towards nature. We take nature for granted, and always put our own needs first.

Nadusha1986 [10]

Read the summary of the section of "The Beginnings of the Maasai,” where the volcanic eruption and its results are described.

As a result of a volcanic eruption, Enkai and the cattle were thrown into the sky. Enkai wanted to save his cattle. He grew a tree that bridged the sky and the earth. The cattle walked down the tree to Neiterkob. Neiterkob and the Maasai tribe took over caring for the cattle.

Why does the summary need to be revised?

The summary incorrectly restates the central idea.

The summary includes too many minor details.

The summary lacks transitions that connect ideas.

The summary is missing important words and phrases.

Answer:

The summary lacks transitions that connect ideas.

Explanation:

From the excerpt of "The Beginnings of the Masai", the narrator first begins to talk about a volcanic eruption and how Enkai and the cattle were thrown into the sky and how Enkai tried to save his cattle by growing a tree that bridged the sky and the earth.

However, the narrator failed to make use of transitions that would connect his ideas which made his summary seem amateurish.

Transitions are words that are used to link ideas in a sentence. An example of transition words are <em>However, But, Therefore, As a result of, </em>etc.
