People often think of migration as a recent phenomenon. However, migration has been a feature of human existence for centuries. Humans have always migrated in groups and as individuals to seek freedom from war and conflict, to escape hunger and poverty, to find new economic opportunities and employment, to flee from religious intolerance or political repression, or even to trade and to travel to new places. The historian Robin Cohen (1995) has identified some distinct migration periods or events that have taken place over the last four centuries.

Read the excerpt from The Odyssey. I shall not see on earth a place more dear, though I have been detained long by Calypso, love
Anastaziya [24]

Answer:

The excerpt of The Odyssey reflects the important role that family plays as a strong cultural value in ancient Greek culture.

Explanation:

For ancient Greeks, the family unit was the foundation of Greek society and played a very important role in their social, political and cultural landscape. Even in our days, for modern Greeks, family still plays a very important role on one's life. The cultural value of family remains strong throughout Greek history.

When the author says "Where shall a man find sweetness to surpass his own home and his parents?" he emphasizes the great value that he puts on his own family, rather than other lands or people.

Explain the policies of paternalism and assimilation
Molodets [167]
Paternalism refers to a person’s behavior, organization or state, which limits freedom of a person or group for their own good. It implies that the behavior expresses superiority attitude regardless of the will of a person, group or state. This behavior is akin to a fatherly attitude wherein subordinates are controlled or should be controlled in a fatherly way. So basically, it is the policy of treating subject people as if they were children, providing their needs but not their rights.

Assimilation, on the other hand, is the social way of adapting one cultural group into harmony with another. Assimilation can be cultural assimilation whereby minority groups gradually absorb to the attitudes and customs or the dominating culture and or customs. This means that it is a policy in which a nation forces or encourages a subject people to adopt its institutions and customs.
