If Democrats were more united, the election have turned out differently by winning more seats in the election. They would get more seats in the different states and would make their government. Due to lack of unity, they were divided and loose their strength so if they were united, they will gain more power, won more seats in the elections and more states comes under their control so that's why we can say that the Democrats won more seat if they were more united.
