This always confused me because I never paid attention but you want to multiply the denominator with the outer number and add the outer number into the equation ( Start 5- 1/5=? End up with 25-1 /5= ?) so then you would simplify the problem which would be 24/5 and simplify it again and that will get you 4 4/5.
This makes no sense because i am a visual learner and dont know how to explain things well but I hope I helped you in some kind of way lol.
