What is July 14th called in France? Why? How does this compare with Independence Day celebrated in America?
Rufina [12.5K]
July 14th in France is called Bastille Day. It is called this because Bastille Day commemorates the first anniversary of Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on July 14th 1790. Bastille day compares with Independence Day in America because both holidays celebrate huge factors in history. For example, the fourth of July in the U.S. commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 while Bastille Day celebrates a turning point in the French revolution (The Storming of the Bastille).
