The English Bill of Rights (December 16, 1689) was enacted by the Parliament of England after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 had forced King James II to abdicate, and before his daughter, Mary, and her Dutch husband, William of Orange, could be declared king and queen. Freedom from cruel and unusual punishment, as well as from excessive bail, is one of the key liberties detailed in the bill.
