Abraham is considered as the first patriarch of the Hebrews because he birthed and raised Isaac, who birthed and raised Jacob (later to be renamed Israel and the head of the Twelve Tribes.

The first person to begin to know God intimately was Abraham. He recieved the template/statute that would guide generations of Jews to come in their interactions with God, hence the reason he is considrered the leader of the Jewish nation. One of such statues was the commandment with respect to circumcision as found in 19th verse of the 18th chapter of the biblical book of Genesis.
