As it has been studied since ancient times, rhetoric explores the capacities and the means that writers or speakers have available in order to convince an audience of the contents of some given arguments. According to Aristotle, there are three modalities of rhetoric: pathos, logos, and ethos, which roughly deal with, respectively, arguments based on emotion, reason, and value in ethical terms.
