Eisenhower, Eisenhower won the nomination and the presidency. Eisenhower offered Warren the position of solicitor general with the promise of a seat on the Supreme Court. Earl Warren accepted but, before the announcement could be made that Warren was to be solicitor general, Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson died suddenly.
