Marizza181 [45]

Answer:

"Perhaps the best I can do is to pray that the youth of today will have the ability to live simply and to get joy out of living,  the desire to give of themselves and to make themselves worthy of giving, and the strength to do without anything which  does not serve the interests of the brotherhood of man."

Why did Miller choose the Salem Witch Trials as the basis for The Crucible?
Andre45 [30]

The McCarthy hearings were similar to the witch trials.  As in the McCarthy Hearings, these people were put on trial without any way to defend themselves. Finally, both during the McCarthy Hearings and during the Salem Witch Trials, the general public was so afraid of being accused of being a communist or a witch respectively that they did not dare question what was going on, nor put a stop to it.

Select the word and phrase from the drop-down menus to correctly complete the sentence.
kotykmax [81]

1. anxious confusion

2. that shared in the general awe and terror

When looking at the options with the context clues, we can eliminate any definitions that have a positive connotation. None of the context clues indicate that consternation would be something that is good. While the first option shows a negative connotation for consternation it is not specific enough to pinpoint a meaning for the word. The context clue "general awe and terror" indicates that there is confusion.
