orous animals. They are solitary predators—they like to hunt alone. Cats are a part of a biological family called felidae, which includes tigers and lions. According to one theory, the domestic cat is the descendant of an African wildcat that was domesticated in the Predynastic period. The same theory supports the hypothesis that the domestic cat can tolerate warmer weather because it evolved from a desert-dwelling species. In ancient Egypt, cats were considered sacred.
