When the writer used sensory language in the second passage, he made the experience seem more real and relatable to the reader. While reading the  second passage, the mention of sensory terms or details such as cool metal, tip of the rod, flattening my hand, small indentations of the screw driver, smothering blackness, etc., made me feel and vividly imagine the predicament of the character in the story.

Indeed, sensory details add life to a literary piece.
