In the novel “Kite Runner”, first novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini, Soraya’s father interrupts her conversation with Amir addressing the appropriateness of their interaction with the following line:

“You know bachem, I have grown rather fond of you. You are a decent boy, I really believe that, but--even decent boys need reminding sometimes. So it's my duty to remind you that you are among peers in this flea market. You see everyone here is a storyteller.”

 

 He does that to remind them that even if they are in another country and he trusts them believing that  they are decent, the people’s mentality is still the same and they gossip finding their often chatting alone inappropriate.
