Read the excerpt from "Code Talkers.” The use of Navajo code was so successful that its existence was kept secret until 1968 so

that the Marines could continue to use it, if necessary. Two decades later, many of the code talkers were recognized for their service. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared August 14 Navajo Code Talkers Day, and in 2000 President Bill Clinton awarded the Congressional Medal to the first twenty-nine code talkers. In the years since, code talkers from the Navajo and thirty-two other American Indian tribes have been awarded the medal.
The author’s purpose in this paragraph was to
a.) entertain readers with a story about how code talkers received medals for their service during wartime.
b.) inform readers that the code talkers were recognized by the US government for their critical work during wartime.
c.) educate readers about the history of US presidents and holidays created to honor groups like the code talkers.
d.) persuade readers that they should learn to create code so they can be recognized by the US government.

I believe the answer would be B, to inform readers that the code talkers were recognised by the US government for their critical work during wartime. This sentence in no way wants to entertain readers with a story about code talkers since the paragraph gives off more information than the purpose to entertain. This paragraph explains the code talkers' place in the war and gives info that the code talkers were recognised for their work and were rewarded by the multiple persons of the US government (the presidents). This paragraph doesn't focus on the history of US presidents, and it doesn't want to persuade the reader to create code, that would be a persuasive paragraph. Not an informational paragraph.

How should monologues be structured
marta [7]

Successful monologues usually involve a great deal of behind-the-scenes effort, as well as a lot of concentration and practice. Structured monologues show the learner’s ability to organize and present information on familiar and less familiar topics in simulated situations. When delivering a structured monologue the key point is to organize your speech in a logical, coherent and cohesive way. A monologue as any structured presentation generally falls into three parts: the introduction, the main body and the conclusion. Each of the parts plays an essential role with its unique function. The introductory or the opening lines of the structured monologue are the most important of all. They could help create the positive impression on the listeners. Good way to start your speech is to say something that grabs the audience’s attention, for example:

• A quotation from a famous/ well-known person;

• A rhetorical question;

 • A strong, powerful declarative statement;

• A scenario opening, which usually begins with “Imagine...”. Do not forget to connect the opening lines of your speech with the main thesis of the structured monologue. The body is the biggest part of the speech, where the majority of information is transferred. This is the part of the monologue where the main points should be made.
