I would say "suspenseful" as they were having some success in figuring out who the code numbers referred to and were anxious to answer the other questions that came up such as the connection between Germany, Mexico and Japan. Since they were deciphering CIA codes this also makes it more suspenseful ie for the intrigue.

Surveying allows you to skim through the chapter. Yoy get to read the objectives, topic headings, Keywords, in case of any, and any diagrams.  surveying helps you to get an idea of what the chapter is about before you can get down to read the text fully.
