These workers if they were fighting for "Industrial democracy" would most likely be to have their representatives have a say in the running of the private enterprises instead of just being wage slaves only good to produce wealth with no power to affect the corporation's decisions. The rise of unions helped this cause. For example, at least the unions can stop the companies from contracting out where the bargaining unit members have the expertise to do the work involved.
