Ang mga elemento ng isang mapa ay ang mga sumusunod: iskala (scale), legend, pangalan ng lugar/mapa, direksiyon (north arrow), may akda ng mapa o kartograper, klase ng projection at petsa kung kailan ito ginawa at nilimbag.

Isang halimbawa ng mapa: ang mapa ng Pilipinas na nagpapakita ng mga rehiyon at mga lalawigan.

Mapa ng Mundo noong 1689.

Ang mapa ay ginagamit sa paglalahad ng anumang lokal na pag-aari ng buong mundo o parte nito. Puwede rin siyang gamitin upang ilahad ang anumang pamamagitan, tulad ng utak o kalawakan sa labas ng mundo. Ang mapa rin ay larawan ng isang lugar na nagpapakita ng direksiyon.
