They established a line of strong monarchs that lasted for eight hundred years and elevated France to the status of a major power. The most important forces that led to increased monarchies in 15th century Europe were: increased population, a failed feudal system, and a want for a "head of state" instead of multiple landowners under the system of feudalism. They were able to establish colonies in the New World under Elizabeth I, which helped increase their wealth through trade. France's absolute monarchy was bolstered by New World trade during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, increased wealth helping to calm some of the aggression that had arisen against the kings.
