From this perspective, the artist representing objects that are farthest from the eye are those closest to the axis of vision. Smaller objects are also interpreted as being further apart. However, there is no unambiguous equivalence between two-dimensional representations and their three-dimensional equivalent.
Another technique is atmospheric perspective, which plays with variations of light and color. In order to obtain an illusion of depth, the artist employs brighter colors, sharper contours and thicker texture on the nearest objects, the farthest - which are placed higher on the canvas - painted less clearly and usually with similar colors to those applied in the background.
