During the Cold War, America was constantly fearful of communist attacks and the Soviet Union in general. Below is a list of some of the actions taken by American citizens/government during this era:

1) Created fallout shelters: These basements/secret hideaways were supposed to provide protection for citizens in case of a nuclear war. This shelter would be stockpiled with food and water in order to ensure survival.

2) Duck and Cover: This was a method taught to students in school on how to protect yourself from a nuclear attack. This involved ducking under a desk and covering the back of their neck. The Duck and Cover video was shown to millions of students all over the country.

Why did Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation?

Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in order to make the American Civil War about slavery.

This meant that European nations could no longer support the Confederacy because that would have meant that they were supporting slavery. It also boosted support for the war amongst African Americans.

The Emancipation Proclamation did not free the enslaved in the border states because Lincoln did not want them to rebel and in any case he didn't have the Constitutional power to do so.

aalyn [17]

Pinard wept and the people cheered because the Berlin Wall was finally torn down and East and West Germany was once again united as one country. When the communist took over East Germany and built the wall, many fled rather than live under communist rule. Many had died attempting to do so because of freedom.
