The Nazi people were less likely got executed in the concentration camps. The main target of the concentration camps were the Jews, Romani, homosexuals and criminals. These concentration camps were created after Hitler took control of Germany. Many people were killed in these concentration camps.

In my opinion I think this quote means that we should respect our contumely and love it and be proud of who we are but we should never fall under the government because sometimes they can take over our lives. For example from the Roman civilization (my guess) the government had caste systems which the citizens fell a prey to and divided themselves among the people.
