Because of chinese cultural restrictions and the complexity of Chinese characters, they failed to bring printed materials to the masses. The invention of movable type was a viable one, but needed a sturdier format and an easier method of creation.

The alphabet of the romance languages, including English, contains only 26 characters, far less than Chinese characters. Making metal letters that could be moved in lines to create a page of copy when inked and transferred to paper was the idea behind Gutenberg’s first press in 1452. The printer’s name is notable in the printing-technology timeline, as the famous Gutenberg Bible was the first time that the holy book was available to commoners, not just kings and bishops. Some of these Bibles were printed on vellum, sheets used in printing made of thinly scraped, specially tanned hide.
