The four founding provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia housed the majority of Canadians in 1871, whereas Western Canada was lightly populated. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia accounted for over a third of the population in 2016.:
