South: wanted to be independent nation.

•Didn't have to invade North or destroy Union army.

• Needed to fight long and hard enough to convince North that war not worth the cost.

North: wanted to restore the Union.

•Forces had to invade south.

• Force breakaway states to give up quest for freedom.

•Slavery helped drive wedge between North and South.

•1862- Lincoln's original aim not to defeat slavery.
