The U.S. stopped exporting oil to Japan in an attempt to stop its continued expansion. This led Japan to seize the Dutch East Indies (today’s Indonesia), a rich oil-producing area. The U.S. demanded that Japan leave the Dutch East Indies and the other countries it had invaded. The Japanese government recoiled at the idea of allowing the U.S. to dictate its national policy. Japan refused to leave the countries it had invaded. Japan entered into peace negotiations with the U.S. in 1941
