The ancient Chinese made many different inventions. What are some of these inventions?

Some inventions of the ancient Chinese include the seismograph, methods of astronomy, gunpowder, the abacus, and the spinning wheel.

Chinese Inventions

The ancient Chinese made many inventions in art, science, and technology. Many of these inventions are still used today.

Inventions in Art

A safely guarded secret for at least a thousand years was the process of making silk. Silk is a type of fabric made from the fibers of a silkworm's cocoon. Silk was also one of the most desired products from Asia and was widely traded on the Silk Road. Additional inventions included calligraphy, porcelain, and lacquerware.

Calligraphy is a type of handwriting that takes great skill and patience. It is important in the field of Chinese art. Each of the characters, 40,000 in number, had to be written perfectly. Calligraphy is still considered an art form today.

Porcelain, also called fine china, was a type of pottery. It came in many forms: cups, bowls, tea sets, incense burners, musical instruments, and jewelry boxes.

Lacquer is a finishing process which protects and gives a high shine to items. Many types of boxes, tableware, and even furniture can be considered lacquerware. Many lacquerware items have a design on them. The design is covered with many layers of lacquer, making the piece of art shiny and protected from insects.
