He was great social reformer and this is evident from his work for the untouchables and against caste discrimination. As an economist he believed in the principle of Sarvodaya economic model which means welfare of all. That's why he was the "yugapurusha" (one who inaugurated new era) and his contribution to Indian freedom struggle was unparalleled.
