<span>The Whig party could not agree on the issue of slavery. This hurt them and caused them to endorse the constitutional union during the election of 1860 which was attempting to keep the union together. But by not taking a side on slavery this third-party had little to no chance at winning the election. The Republican Party was able to receive the most votes (all from the north) which caused them to win the election.
