The Northern States did not have many slaves or slave owners because they did not rely on slave labor for their economy which was gravitating towards industry rather than agriculture. Even their agriculture did not rely on slave labor as they had started using modern planting techniques.

A lot of Northerners also saw slavery as a moral wrong and even went so far as to link the plight of enslaved people to their own when the British were their rulers. These factors made abolishing slavery less of a challenge in Northern states.
