Czech immigrants arrived in Texas as early as 1823. Rev. Josef Arnošt Bergmann is considered the father of Czech immigration to Texas. He began writing friends in Europe about the opportunities awaiting them in Texas. They mostly settled in central Texas. By 1910, more than 15,000 Texas residents had been born in Czechoslovakia. Inexpensive and fertile farmland was the biggest attraction for migration. Some were fleeing political and religious oppression and military conscription in the Austrian Empire. They established close-knit communities, embraced American democratic ideals, organized Czech language schools, established Czech language newspapers, and built Catholic churches. Today, Czech ethnic festivals and celebrations are extremely popular. The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center opened in 2004 in La Grange. Kolaches are fruit-, cheese-, or meat-filled pastries commonly found in Texas bakeries.
