Alexander the Great of Macedon invaded Persia intent on ending the empire as revenge for the Persian invasions of Greece in the past. A very able commander, Alexander never lost a battle and captured Persia in its entirety.

When he captured Egypt from the Persians, the Egyptians viewed him as their liberator and rightful ruler such that he was crowed Pharaoh in 332 BC and held the title till his death. This title passed on to one of his generals whose descendants then ruled Egypt till Augustus conquered the nation for Rome.
