Fats and oils are part of a healthful diet, however the type of fat makes a difference to heart health and the total amount of fat consumed is important. Fat contains about 9 kilocalorie per gram. Fats are classified as saturated, monosaturated, or polysaturated based on the type of chemical bonds in their fatty acids. The recommended fat intake is between 20 to 30 percent of calories for adults, 30 to 35 percent of calories for children  2 to 3 years and 25 to 35 percent for adolescents 4 to 18 years of age.
