They belived it was necassary to form the Continental army because of the Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, and their main oppressors, the British Redcoats.

Explanation:

The Boston Massacre was the first spark of the revolution formins if you don't count the Townshed Acts. The Massacre ended with 5 colonists killed and 6 wounded. Then, the Tea Act is introduced on the colonies, so in fear and anger, a group of hardline revolutionaries called The Sons of Liberty dump tea in the Bostin Harbor, worth thousands of British pounds. The British were horrified by this and sent more redcoats (British soldiers) into Boston. When the soldiers arivved, the tension grew, and was palpable. Not long after, the first militiamen were recruited, forming the continental army.
