Does anyone know how the compromise of 1850 settled the California problem? (To please the north)

Well, besides The Fugitive Slave Law, the south got the short end of the stick on this one. As far as pleasing the north, California would be admitted as a FREE STATE! This is very important, because if it would have been a slave state, that would have tipped the balance of power in the Senate in favor of the southern slave owners. In addition, Washington D.C abolished slavery! Unfortunately, this was ONLY in D.C. States like Georgia and Kentucky could carry on enslaving other people.
