It is, I think, a shameful part of American History that it took until August 18, 1920 for the 19th Amendment to be passed by congress. It took 144 years after the signing of the Declaration of independence for women to gain the right to vote and to hold office.
The setting of "Marigolds" is during the depression or the 30s. You know this because the story says, "The depression that gripped the nation was no new thing to us" and "the black workers of rural Maryland had always been depressed".
