Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by betacells of the pancreatic islets in the pancreas. It regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein by promoting the absorption of glucose from the blood into liver, fat through proteins, called pumps, which actively transport it through the cell membrane. Insulin promotes, through binding to insulinreceptors, the synthesis of glycogen, fatty acids and triglycerides which can be used to produce energy in fasting conditions through catabolic processes.
