They could not get drafted, but enlisted in large numbers, over 10,000 served in the war. They were not allowed to help the red cross, they were barred from that. They were not really employed, their land was employed by companies. There were 19 working as code-talkers, but they were not really known for that, the Navajos in WWII were known better since they contributed to the victory on Iwo Jima, a ferocious battle. Thus, they were known best as soldiers, combat service in the army. Hope this helps.
