Mahatma Gandhi, an English-educated lawyer, was the leader
of Indian independence movement against British rule in India. He did so through
nonviolence, engaging in civil disobedience and fasts to achieve goals rather
than violent conflict. His works and efforts are successful, but ongoing
religious and ethnic strife gave way to the very violent Partition of India in
1947. By the time of his assassination, Gandhi implored tolerance and peace
between religions. Gandhi’s successor is Jawaharlal Nehru, who was elected the
first Prime Minister of India.
India has had a traditional society, classified into castes, having massive social and economic inequalities;
the <em>Indian Constitution</em> was created to build structures that could help with fundamental rights and freedoms, promoting social reforms and thus improve the education and economic status of the general people.

Through literature, one can travel through time and learn about life on Earth from those who came before us. We can learn more about different cultures and develop a deeper appreciation for them. We get knowledge via the methods used to record history, including manuscripts and verbal communication.
