The following rational equation has denominators that contain variables. For this equation, a. Write the value or values of the
EastWind [94]

Answer:

 a) x=3 and x=-6 will make the denominator terms zero, hence x may not have those values.

 b) no solution

Step-by-step explanation:

The left side can be written over a common denominator so as to make the equation be ...

 ((x+6) -3(x-3))/((x-3)(x+6)) = 9/((x -3)(x +6))

 (-2x +15)/((x -3)(x +6)) = 9/((x -3)(x +6)) . . . . simplify

 -2(x -3)/((x -3)(x +6)) = 0 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . subtract the right side

 -2/(x+6) = 0 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . cancel factors of (x -3)

This equation has no solution. (There is no value of x that will make -2 = 0.)

_____

Comment on denominator zeros

After you've seen a few instances of the equation

 x + c = 0

it doesn't take long for you to recognize that the solution is ...

 x = -c

That is, when a denominator factor is (x+c), the corresponding value of x that makes this factor zero is x = -c. So, a denominator factor of x+c means the domain must exclude x = -c.

Knowing this, we can write the restrictions on a rational function "by inspection" without having to do anything except mental pattern matching.

_____

Comment on the solution method

By rewriting the rational equation to be something of the form (a/b) = 0, we have the opportunity, as here, to cancel factors that would otherwise result in extraneous solutions. Then, we don't have to be concerned with whether or not the solutions found are extraneous.

Carol has a small copy of a painting. The dimensions of her copy are shown at right. The scale of the copy is 0.5 inches : 12 ce
larisa [96]
The complete question in the attached figure

we know that
[scale]=0.5/12
[scale]=[copy of a painting]/[original painting]

dimensions copy of a painting--------------> 1.75 in x 5.25 in

for 1.75 in
[original painting]=[copy of a painting]/[scale]
[original painting]=[1.75]/[(0.5/12)]=42 cm

for 5.25 in
[original painting]=[copy of a painting]/[scale]
[original painting]=[5.25]/[(0.5/12)]=126 cm

the answer Part A) is
the dimensions of the original painting are 42 cm x 126 cm

Part B)
Find the area of the original painting.
[area of the original painting]=42*126=5292 cm²

the answer Part B) is
area of the original painting is 5292 cm²

Part C)
One centimeter is equal to approximately 0.033 foot. Find the dimensions of the original painting in feet.

the dimensions of the original painting are 42 cm x 126 cm
then

for 42 cm
if 1 cm----------------> 0.033 ft
42 cm----------------> X
X=42*0.033=1.386 ---------> 1.386 ft

for 126 cm
if 1 cm----------------> 0.033 ft
126 cm----------------> X
X=126*0.033=4.158 --------> 4.158 ft

the answer Part C) is
the dimensions of the original painting in feet are 1.386 ft x 4.158 ft

Part D) Find the area of the painting in square feet. Round to the nearest thousands.

the dimensions of the original painting in feet are 1.386 ft x 4.158 ft
{Area original painting in feet]=1.386*4.158=5.763 ft²

the answer part C) is
the area original painting in feet is 5.763 ft²
