Because a science-based understanding of our universe is, more than other (myth-based or religious-base) understandings, capable of delivering (1) measuring instruments by means of which we can test our hypotheses regarding the structure of the universe and (2) a scientific language that is as much as possible free from ambiguity and vagueness.
The people of Sumer are among the earliest denizens of Mesopotamia. By about 4000 BCE, the Sumerians had organized themselves into several city-states that were spread throughout the southern part of the region. These city-states were independent of one another and were fully self-reliant centers, each surrounding a temple that was dedicated to god or goddess specific to that city-state. Each city-state was governed by a Priest King.

The War of 1812 is unusual in that both nations believe their country to have won the war. In the United States, this was extremely signficant as a way to unify the nation by creating a strong national identity. Prior to this war, Americans did not feel unified, as people focused more on their belonging to a particular colony than to the nation. However, the threat of a foreign nation attacking the United States contributed to developing a sense of unity. Because of this, the war has been called the "second war of independence."
