Charles Lindbergh

On May 21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh completed the first solo, nonstop flight ever across the Atlantic Ocean on May 21, 1927. He flew the plane named the <em>Spirit of St. Louis </em>from New York to Paris.

New York hotel owner Raymond Orteig had offered a $25,000 prize for whomever could complete the first nonstop flight between New York and Paris. Lindbergh got support from investors in St. Louis, and thus named the plane bulit for the purpose the <em>Spirit of St. Louis</em>.

1) The American people were strongly independent. They wanted to do things for themselves. Great Britain was a long way away. The American people didn't want people an ocean away telling them how to live their lives.
2) The British government decided to make the American colonies pay a large share of the war debt from the French and Indian War.
3) Through the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and other taxes, the British tried to collect taxes that the American people considered harsh.
