Answer:

A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols. In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of practitioners and adepts, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing a sacred space and as an aid to meditation and trance induction.

Answer:

The mandala is probably the best-known Buddhist symbol in art. The word mandala translates to “essence container.” Accordingly, it is a geometric design symbolizing the essence of the universe. The image of the mandala symbolizes the Buddha’s mind and body, and therefore it sometimes incorporates an image of him. However, symbols of the Buddha such as a wheel, tree, or jewel may be used in place of his physical form.

Mandalas are important to Buddhist art, but not all are made from sand. Some are made from permanent materials like paint and stone, or other temporary ones like petals or colored water. But all mandalas have one thing in common: sacred geometry. To the Buddhist, preparing a mandala is an act of worship just as much as it is an act of artistic creation. The essence of the completed work precedes its existence; thus, its concept precedes its form.

No matter how large or how complex, every mandala begins with a single dot in its center. From that center outside energies are drawn, including from the people who are creating the mandala. Lines materialize from the first dot, and these lines ultimately intersect to form triangles. Encapsulating these lines and triangles is a square, representing the physical world and its four cardinal directions. A large circle, representing the consciousness of the creators, contains all of these forms. In other words, consciousness is a container that holds the essence of the universe.
