Charlie is fascinated by Algernon's intelligence, wishing to become as smart as the rat.

As a matter of fact, they warned Charlie before the surgery, but he did not care. Now that he sees it happening to Algernon, Charlie realizes, as do the others, that it will most likely happen to him as well. As Algernon gets worse, Charlie suffers in anticipation for himself.
