Mansa Musa was the ruler of the Mali Empire in West Africa from 1312 to 1337 CE. Controlling territories rich in gold and copper, as well as monopolising trade between the north and interior of the continent, the Mali elite grew extremely wealthy.
During his reign Mali was at the peak of its development. Islam who has already spread across the country became the official religion. After his pilgrimage to Mecca, Musa decided to built a large number of mosques in the country. Thus, the city of Timbuktu became a religious center where many universities were built, thus spreading knowledge and Islamic learning. Timbuktu was regarded as the holiest city in this region, thus becoming the center of Islam.
