The "sugar trade" occurred in the early 16th century. Sugar was also called "white gold" by the British people. It was so profitable that producing the crop became very common. However, sugar production required intensive labor and it became the reason why manpower was important. In order to increase production, the settlers needed to have slaves. Many of the Africans were forced to settle into the sugar plantations of the New World in order to increase the sugar production, regardless of their gender and age. Many of the slaves died only in a span of three years owing to tough work and inhumane conditions. This further increased the demand for new slaves.
