Changing the aperture setting on a camera can control Open Depth of field. A camera lens contains an iris, much like an eye, that opens and closes to let in a certain amount of light.
A small/narrow portion of an image which is in focus is referred to as a shallow depth of field. The background will often be blurred while the person or thing is focused.
