Meta physicals poets were poets whose poetry was characterized by the by inventive use of the conceits, and who gave greater emphasis on spoken rather than the lyrical quality in their verse. The term was coined by Samuel Johnson, the critic.
Their work was highly characterized by bold and incongruous imagery, ingenious conceits, complexity of thought and logical explanations.
