Juan Garrido was born in 1847 in West Africa and he moved to Lisbon, Portugal as an adult. He was a free African slaved that worked alongside Juan Ponce de León for many years. He served with León when he was king of Puerto Rico before León lost his kingship to Diego Columbus in 1513. Juan Garrido went with Juan Ponce de León after his defeat to look for another settlement, it was on this expedition that Florida was discovered. He was assumed to have died between 1547 to 1550 in Mexico City.
