I think if you try hard enough you can forget things, I'd say people would try to forget things that may have hurt them, or caused emotional distress. And if you can't make yourself forget, then your just stuck with sad memories. Hope this helps!! (:

Answer: Much of the humor in Somerset Maugham's short story "The Luncheon" derives from the fact that the narrator is trying to appear sophisticated, urbane, and gallant, whereas he really can't afford to be entertaining this woman in such an expensive restaurant as Foyot's. He feels relieved initially because she tells him, "I never eat anything for luncheon," and then he is appalled when she orders some of the most expensive items the place has to offer. I read it a real long time ago but from what I remember the warden confronted him multiple times, overall, I think he felt accused and betrayed Bc no one believed him in the courtroom when he denied stealing the shoes. But when he was sent to the camp and the. Warden confronted him, I think he felt a little afraid.
