During the Vietnam war the intellectual circles had to demonstrate their disgust at the war.

Explanation:

The intellectual circles in the time of the Vietnam war including some of the realist theoreticians had all been vehemently against the war effort there.

As they predicted the US was not good there and this piled up their resentment for not being heard in time.

The soldiers were also angry at being thrown into the mouth of hell pretty much and many of them complained about fighting in such conditions.

In the end the government had to give in.
